Behind the Scenes: Editorial Fashion Photography With Melissa
What happens when you pair the right model with a photographer who’s not afraid to take risks? Simple, you get magic.
Look One: Clean, Minimal, All Eyes on the Tee
Our first setup was all about keeping things simple. Melissa rocked a Karl Lagerfeld tee with knee-high snakeskin boots, one of those pieces that just demands the spotlight. My approach? Strip away the distractions and let her and the tee carry the frame. That’s my philosophy across every shoot: when the styling is right, the lighting, posing, and mood fall right into place.
Camera nerds: this was shot on a Canon EOS R with a Sigma 24-70. Lighting was a Godox AD600 camera left, an AD400 for fill behind, plus V-flats for some negative fill. Clean. Straightforward. Commercial-leaning.
Editorial vs. Commercial: Why It Matters
Here’s the deal:
- Commercial shots sell the product, simple, polished, product-first.
- Editorial shots sell the story, mood, emotion, and style drive the connection.
Look one leaned commercial, look two leaned editorial, and together they show how versatile fashion imagery can be for brands, designers, and models.
Look Two: Football Meets High Fashion
For the second look, we flipped the script. Melissa came back out in a jersey sweater, thigh-highs, and stilettos, a mash-up of athletic energy and bold styling. Football season is big in Texas, so why not play with that vibe? She owned it, brought the attitude, and turned a seasonal nod into something editorial-worthy.
The Takeaway
The images that stop people mid-scroll are the ones where you step past safe and into “let’s just try it.” That’s where the storytelling lives.
Whether you’re a brand needing campaign visuals, a designer who wants your work treated like art, or a model building a portfolio that shows range, editorial fashion photography gets you there.
